Cleveland church ransacked, money meant for children stolen

The husband and wife pastors at a Cleveland church said crooks ransacked their sanctuary and stole money meant for needy children.

Pastors Edwin and Renae Moore of Way of Escape Ministries on Denison Avenue near W. 69th St. said it happened sometime between 10 p.m. Thursday and 6 p.m. Friday.

A member discovered the glass front door kicked in. Inside, church offices were ransacked, with file cabinets and chairs knocked over and a safe, filled with hundreds of dollars and black checks — gone.

What’s worse, they said, whoever did it must have been familiar with the property. The church is tucked away down a hill off Denison in a nondescript building.

“It could have been anybody who maybe used our services and saw what was down here,” Pastor Edwin Moore said, “And figured they could come back. It could be anybody.”

The money stolen was meant to help needy children, they said.

“So they stole from our babies,” Pastor Renae Moore said, "My kids work hard. They work hard and they should be able to feel safe in the church, but I don’t see that right now.”

The church did not have security cameras. Anyone with information should call Cleveland Police.
