The United States Coast Guard is concerned that downtown Cleveland’s prime waterfront location could make it a potential terror target.

In advance of the Republican National Convention, Cleveland’s lakefront and the Cuyahoga River have been divided into six security zones, with restrictions on boat travel in place during the week of the convention.

During a ride along with crew members on Friday, Lieutenant Commander Mickey Dougherty said Security Zone 4, the portion of the river right outside the Quicken Loans Arena, is receiving a great deal of attention.

“This is an area for potential threats,” Lt. Commander Dougherty said, “Which is why we set up the security and will have our vessels present throughout the convention.”

Dougherty said he was not aware of any credible terror threats, but said they must be ready.

Planing for the convention has been underway for a year, he said, with guardsmen from across the country prepared to station in Cleveland during the RNC. He said they’ll also coordinate with local marine law enforcement.
