Cold temps can be dangerous for you and your pet

Doctors say the coldest air Northeast Ohio has seen this season can be dangerous if you’re not careful.

As temperatures dip to near Zero on Saturday night, they’re reminding people to bundle up, refrain from strenuous activities and limit time outside.

Signs of frostbite include a pins and needles feeling or a stinging sensation. More severe signs include blisters and numbness, which are signs you may want to see medical attention.

Scott Mesi took precautions and didn’t allow the frigid temperatures to keep him from his routine jog.

"I have insulated leggings on...and gloves, hat, and two layers of upper body, so yeah it keeps me warm,” Mesi said.

And don’t forget about about your pets. While doggy sweaters and coats are a good idea, veterinarian Dr. Bob Litkovitz at the Tremont Animal Clinic said paws and ears are the most prone to frostbite and other health issues.

"When you're walking your dog in cold weather, you're going to have to be aware of the salt and the treatment for the ice, them getting in their pads and licking it and burning their feet,” Dr. Litkovitz said.

Make sure larger breeds that are used to the cold have access to fresh, non-frozen water and an area to escape the wind.
