East Cleveland police say officer shot man after he pulled a firearm from his waistband while running from police

EAST CLEVELAND — A man was shot in an officer-involved shooting after he allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband while running from police on Euclid Avenue in East Cleveland Wednesday night, according to a release from Chief Scott Gardner, of the East Cleveland Police Department.

At around 11:55 p.m., officers responded to the 15300 block of Euclid Avenue, located near Shaw High School, in reference for a male with a knife.

When officers arrived on the scene and looked for the male at a nearby gas station parking lot.

Officers left the gas station and located a man matching the description of the male with a knife.

The male started to run on foot away from officers, throwing contraband from his clothing onto the ground, according to the release.

Officers said the male pulled a firearm from his waistband, at which time an officer fired one round, striking the man.

The man was taken into custody and then was transported to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

While investigating the scene, police located a firearm at the spot the man had dropped it.

The Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting with the investigation.

BCI will be lead the investigation of the officer involved shooting.
