LAKEWOOD, Ohio — A man is in custody after a SWAT standoff at a home on Clifton Boulevard in Lakewood Wednesday night, according to police.

Police responded at around 11:30 p.m. to the 14600 block of Clifton Boulevard for a call requesting the welfare check of residents.

When officers arrived, an unresponsive man was located outside the home. Paramedics were requested and the man, later identified by the medical examiner as Craig Cullen-Terzano, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene.

During Gov. Mike DeWine's press conference on Thursday, the governor said Cullen-Terzano worked for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation Corrections for 10 years.

According to DeWine, Cullen-Terzano would drive four hours round-trip to work at the corrections center in Orient.

"Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones and to those who work with him," DeWine said.

The Lakewood Police Department said an investigation revealed that a man was alone inside the home, who had been in contact with police through a series of phone calls. He refused to exit the home.

Eventually, the man inside the home surrendered and was taken into custody.
