Changes continue at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport as their massive year-long construction project continues.
Airport Commissioner Frank Szabo said one of the most congested sections of the terminal will re-open on Monday, after months of renovations. Construction walls near the main escalator bank on the upper level will come down and alleviate congestion.
“That’s a very high traffic area. It’s in the center of the airport,” Szabo said. "Most people who come in through the garage see that area, so we’re very pleased that we’re going to be able to show it off come Monday.”
In recent weeks, the focus of construction has shifted from the north end of the terminal to the southern end, which means new traffic patterns and shifted security checkpoints. United passengers walk through a wooden hallway to get to security.
There’s also less space for cars to pick up and drop off passengers, for the time being.
The changes have even confused some frequent fliers.
Eventually the entire terminal will be redesigned with modern finishes, including LED lighting, better climate control and blast-proof glass.
Szabo said the project is on track for a spring completion, before the Republican National Convention.
