PARMA, Ohio — The Parma Police Department is accepting applications for the spring Citizens Police Academy.

The 10-week-long program gives citizens a firsthand look at the rules, regulations and policies that police follow as a way to better connect the community with the police department.

“The objective is not to train individuals in becoming police officers but to produce informed citizens. The citizens and police officers meet in a neutral, friendly setting and get to know each other,” Lieutenant Thomas Siedlecki said. “In the past, citizens have simply seen a uniform. Now they have an understanding about the person behind the badge.”

The program begins on April 23 and runs weekly on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Citizens Police Academy is free but the following requirements must be met to participate:

· Must be at least 18 years of age

· Must have no criminal history, other than minor traffic violations (Background checks will be performed.)

· Must be physically able to participate in active class events

· Must be able to commit to attending 10 weekly three-hour sessions (April 23 to June 25)

· Required waivers and agreements must be signed
