Keeping the water clean to keep you safe - that's what one local group has been doing for years and you probably don't even realize it.
We spent time with them to see exactly what they do.
They hit the water first thing in the morning, spraying down docks, and patrolling four days a week from dawn to dusk.
"This is a typical day for the boats," said Jared Magyer, Director of Facilities for the Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority.
The partnership between the Port Authority and Downtown Cleveland Alliance has created a few unsung heroes of the Cuyahoga River.
“The focus is keeping the Cuyahoga River of the North Coast Harbor area clean and free of debris," Magyer said.
The team spends time picking up debris like floating logs, trees and even tires - things that could be dangerous and costly if in contact with a boat.
"For these boaters out here, there's a lot of hazards out there in that water, that I mean boats are expensive and it's expensive to repair them," said Donald Edwards, Senior Chief of the Flotsam and Jetsam boat who’s been doing this work since it started 6 years ago.
It’s all to keep waterways clear for boaters in a quick and efficient way.
“The most rewarding part is just knowing, having a job and just knowing that at the end of the day, you've accomplished something and helped others,” said Edwards.
The boat originally started hitting the waterways in the fall of 2012; they’ll be patrolling all summer and will wrap up in late October at the end of the season.
