HURON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 16-year-old who possibly shot and killed his mother then turned the gun on himself has died, officials confirmed.

Deputies responded to the 500 block of Snowy Egret Drive on Tuesday evening. When they arrived, they found a woman and a teenager suffering from gunshot wounds.

Heather Schmidt, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said she was the victim of at least one gunshot wound to head.

Schmidt's 16-year-old son, Dakota Leeland, was flown to Metro Hospital in very critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, officials said. He died after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Information indicates the incident is a homicide/suicide committed by Leeland, officials said.

Autopsies on both Leeland and Schmidt are expected to be conducted Thursday.

Schmidt's younger son discovered the two in the basement of the home and called 911.

Deputies said they have been dispatched to the home numerous times in the past.

The home has surveillance video that may have captured the incident and is being reviewed, according to the Erie County Sheriff.
