Adult resident dies in house fire on Mentor Avenue in Painesville

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — An investigation is underway into a residential fire in Painesville that killed a man Tuesday morning, according to the Painesville City Fire Department.

Crews responded at 2:30 a.m. to a fire at a two-story apartment home in the 500 block of Mentor Avenue.

Firefighters quickly worked to search the building but were severely hampered by hoarding conditions and a partial roof collapse, according to the news release.

A man was located dead inside one of the apartments. The man has been identified by the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office as Timothy Allen Dagnan, 63, according to the Painesville Fire Department. He died from asphyxia from soot inhalation.

The property, valued at $98,740, is likely a total loss. The fire was eventually brought under control at approximately 4:00 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
