One day after a standoff at a Painesville home that left neighbors on edge, authorities say that a Gates Mills police officer was shot twice by his wife before she turned the gun on herself inside a home on Cedarbrook Drive.

Policewerecalled to the 100 block of Cedarbrook Drive around 4:14 p.m. after Dylan Hustosky, 27, an officer with the Gates Mills Police Department, called 9-1-1 and said, "My wife just shot me through the door."

Police confirmed that the Officer Hustosky was shot twice in the arm.

After failed attempts to reach Kayleigh Hustosky inside the home, Lake County SWAT was called to assist Painesville officers.

At around 7 p.m. it was discovered that Kayleigh Hustosky, 29, was found dead with a single gunshot wound inside the upstairs bedroom. Preliminary autopsy reports show the gunshot wound is consistent with suicide.

The gun used during the shooting was not a service weapon, according to police.

Officer Hustosky and Kayleigh Hustosky were married for two-and-a-half years and were residents of Painesville for two years, according to police.

The couple had a 3-year-old child who was with Kayleigh Hustosky's sister in Stow at the time of the standoff.

During the standoff, police immediately called school officials at Heritage Middle School, which was located across the street, to place the school on lockdown. The school was not yet in session.

Police said there was only one prior call from the Cedarbrook residence for criminal damaging that was unrelated to any domestic issues.

Officer Hustosky underwent surgery for two gunshot wounds to his arm.

Gates Mills Police Chief Greg Minichello said Officer Hustosky, who is assigned to the patrol division, is an outstanding employee, saying, "I wish I had ten of him."

"Our condolences go out to Dylan and his entire family. We are and will continue to support the Hustosky family in any way that we can," said Minichello.
