Classmates, family and loved ones of a 9-year-old boy, who died after being hit by a car, gathered for a prayer vigil on Saturday.
The vigil, at Great Lakes Church in Amherst, celebrated the life of Drew Hayden, who was sledding on a hill off Meadow Lakes Boulevard early Tuesday evening when he slid into the street.
He was struck by driver 44-year-old Chris Nagel, who was driving southbound with his teenage son in the car.
Hayden was transported to St. John West Shore Hospital by the North Ridgeville Fire Department, and then taken by Life Flight to MetroHealth Medical Center. He died of his injuries on Friday.
On Saturday, Christian Nieves wore a football jersey with his best friend’s name emblazoned over top his own.
“He was really my best friend and once I heard about this my heart was broken,” Nieves said.
Candles lined the stage with images of Drew flashing behind.
“The kids are devastated,” Lynda Pasela said. "You always see this stuff on the news happening, but you never think it’s going to be you or knowing somebody this close and it’s really hit home.”
