A Rocky River police sergeant was injured in an accidental shooting at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School shooting range Monday.

According to Lorain County JVS officials, the police department was using the range for training purposes.

The officer, 48, suffered one self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg from a .223 caliber rifle. The bullet traveled in and out of his leg, traveling through his foot.

He was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center via medical helicopter for treatment.

The shooting range is only used for law enforcement training activities since the district converted its Law Enforcement Program to Public Safety three years ago.

The Lorain County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting.

According to Rocky River authorities, the sergeant has worked for the department for 25 years.
