MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio — Routines can feel boring and repetitive at times, but had it not been for an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper simply doing his job, who knows what might have happened to one of man’s best friends.
It was the morning of Aug. 23 when an unexpected encounter at a rest stop along I-71 in Medina County led Trooper John Kronander to spot a pit bull puppy left in a crate, seemingly dumped in plain sight.
Kronander is heard on body camera video saying to the dog, “We'll get you out of here, okay? Someone left you. It's okay. How long you been here? You pawing me? Oh my gosh. Are you pawing me?”
The energetic puppy played with Kronander, who used a Gatorade bottle in his hand as a toy.
“Oh, hello. Are you playing? Are you playing? Hi. Want to go with me?” Kronander said to the dog.
The two quickly formed a bond, and Kronander was able to get the dog into his patrol car.
“Will you get mad if I pick you up?” Kronander said to the dog. “Will you get upset with me? Okay, here you go. Here you go. Sit right down there for me. Perfect!”
The dog was taken to the Highway Patrol’s Medina Post and later to the Medina County SPCA.
Ohio State Highway Patrol told News 5 anchor Damon Maloney that it is still gathering information about the rescue to determine the next steps in the case.
