PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — University Hospitals is helping families facing food insecurity with their new Food for Life Market.

The new market, located in Portage County, is the second of its kind in the area—the first opening in Cuyahoga County in 2018.

Those in need will receive a referral from their doctor and are able to visit the market once a month for up to six months to receive a week’s worth of nutritious groceries.

"There at the market it's staffed by registered dietitians and it's a choice market so our patients can shop the market and choose foods that they want, that they're used to. Of course the dietitian is there to help nudge and try new things," said Anne Leach, Director, Clinical & Community Nutrition.

University Hospitals said the market in Cuyahoga County has provided 70,000 pounds of food to 1,100 patients so far.
