A burglary suspect has been hospitalized after he was shot by the resident of the Mansfield house he broke into Sunday.

According to the Richland County Sheriff, three suspects forced their way into a home in the 600 block of Kentucky Avenue Sunday morning, assaulted a 52-year-old woman sleeping on the couch and demanded to know the whereabouts of her 23-year-old son.

"I got beaten and hit in the head," said the woman on the 911 call. "My arm is bleeding. The guy stuck the gun in my head, face and mouth."

The son, who was in the basement when the trio entered the home, came upstairs and confronted the suspects.

“Yep, we got one of them," she said to the dispatcher. "We got their gun. Don’t move!”

During the altercation, the son shot one of the suspects multiple times and the other two fled the scene.
The suspect was subdued at gunpoint while the woman called 911.

"I'm so scared," said the woman frantically.

The condition of the suspect has not been released, and no charges have been filed at this time.

Sheriff deputies said drugs were found at the scene, and the incident is under investigation.

The police report lists that deputies also took a number of items from the scene including a metal crack pipe, brass knuckles, two guns, three knives, bullets and shell casings among others.

"They’re mostly quiet people," said Ben Kobb, a neighbor. "They mostly stay to themselves.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 419-524-2412.
