MANSFIELD, Ohio — The Richland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in Mansfield.

Around 3:33 p.m., deputies were called to the 1000 block of Koogle Road for a possible shooting.

Once on scene deputies found two individuals who had been shot. Deputies talked to a woman who had been shot in the arm and she said her husband had been shot in the back.

Deputies found the man lying on the floor of his apartment with a gunshot wound. He was responsive and talking and told deputies that they had just moved in the day before and on Saturday heard a knock on their door. The man went to answer and two men in masks were at the door pointing a gun at him, according to deputies.

The man told deputies the two masked men tried to push their way into his home but he pushed them back and as he was attempting to lock the door, one of the men began firing through the door, striking him in his hip area. The two men kicked the door open and pointed the gun at the man but did not enter the apartment, deputies said.

A younger boy was in the apartment asleep on the couch at the time of the shooting but was not injured, according to deputies.

EMS transported the man and the woman to a nearby hospital and deputies said the man was headed into surgery, deputies said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call detectives at 419-774-6300.
