SHELBY, Ohio — Residents in Richland County who were affected by an EF-2 tornado that wreaked havoc along its 17-mile-long path will not receive any additional assistance from the state, according to an Ohio Emergency Management Agency representative.

The tornado touched down in Shelby two weeks ago and moved across the county, damaging 179 structures before dissipating. Of those structures, eight of them were uninsured.

According to the Ohio EMA, the “funding threshold for assistance is determined by the amount of uninsured damage.” Since the vast majority of damage affected insured structures, the state will not be providing additional assistance.

Despite the state’s decision, residents whose property was damaged can get help from a disaster fund that was previously set up at a Mechanic’s Bank, with 100% of the donations going to tornado victims. Additionally, Richland County has its own disaster fund that works with Catholic Charities.

Residents in Richland County can call 211 to donate to the charity.
