Canton police announced Tuesday that K9's Cash, Bas, Zayne, Vlad and Pantzer will get new protective vests worth nearly $2,000 each; their comrade Jethro won't, he was shot while responding to a supermarket burglary on January 9.

Jethro died the next day.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a police K9 is $1,050, but each has a value between $1,795 and $2,234, according to police.

The body armor, which provides bullet and stab protection, is a gift from the charity, Vested Interest in K9's, Inc., in East Taunton, Mass. And though Jethro, who was a 2-year-old German Shepherd, won't don one of the new pieces of protective armor, he hasn't been forgotten by his friends in blue.

Each vest will bear the embroidered phrase, "In Memory of K9 Jethro EOW 1-10-2016."
