Canton police increasing patrols due to rise in violent crime

Posted

Violent crime is on the rise in Canton and now police are increasing their number of officers on patrol to keep up.

The department calls the extra four officers on the streets the "Violence Interdiction Patrol" or VIP.

"You always hear about all this shooting," Canton resident Pam Church told News 5.

She says she's personally noticed the increase in crime in her hometown.

"We never had to deal with that growing up," she said.

Captain Dave Davis told News 5 they are working to curb the trend with the patrol program.

"This will be a proactive approach to what we already do," Captain Davis said.

The VIP is a supplement to existing patrols, with assignments tailored to what's going on in the city that focus on cutting crime.

"We will be giving them details plans daily and details areas for them to patrol," Captain Davis said.

Since their June 11 debut, the patrol has made 17 arrests, issued 11 citations and served 18 warrants. They've made 5 illegal drug recoveries and recovered 4 firearms.
