The City Council in Massillon has voted to acquire Affinity Medical Center.

The area's only hospital closed in February after its parent company, Quorum Health, shut the hospital down citing several consecutive years of unprofitability.

A community-wide effort took shape earlier this year to keep Affinity in Massillon for fear of greater response times to emergency medical calls. The next closest hospitals are Mercy Medical Center and Aultman Hospital, both in Canton about 15 to 20 minutes away.

After Monday night's vote, the city is now approved to take over all the property and assets from Affinity for $1.

The Canton Repository reports maintaining the facility could cost Massillon $620,000. But Massillon may get an $800,000 trust in this deal, which will need to be approved by the Court of Appeals.
