One of the oldest buildings in East Sparta burned down early Friday morning.
According to East Sparta Fire Chief Arnie Adams, the call came in just after 1 a.m. for a fire at the Towne Pump Tavern just off the circle at Main Avenue and Walnut Street.
Adams said he lives about a mile down the street and was on scene less than 3 minutes after the first call but the fire had already engulfed the entire second floor.
Adams said the building was built sometime around 1870 and was a loss for the town.
No injuries were reported.
Adams did not believe that the apartments were occupied and said the bar had closed around midnight.
The lack anyone inside the building allowed the fire to advance too much for the firefighters to be able and save the building.
Four area departments assisted East Sparta.
