HUDSON, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating after Hudson police shot a man who was allegedly wielding a hammer on State Route 91, also known as Darrow Road.
Around 4:11 a.m. Hudson police got a call about a man yelling at drivers.
"There was a guy walking down the street with a t-shirt and bare feet," a male caller told the 911 operator. "And he started yelling at me as I rounded the corner from Stoney Hill to Darrow.
Hudson Police said they responded to the SR 91 near Stoney Hill Drive and found the suspect who "aggressively confronted the officer while brandishing a hammer."
According to Hudson police, the officer then fired his gun and the suspect was shot. He was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment. It's not clear how many shots were fired.
Video from AirTracker 5 captured yellow tape and multiple evidence markers as Hudson Police and Ohio BCI agents worked the scene.
Investigators believe the suspect allegedly shattered the front door of a nearby Sunoco gas station earlier in the morning.
The owner of the Sunoco, Nick Patel, said the man repeatedly smashed the glasss with what appeared to be a hammer. Patel's alarm system notified him of the break-in.
Patel said the break-in happened at 4:04 a.m., seven minutes before police received the 911 call about the man yelling at motorists.
"I never thought someone would do this in Hudson," Patel said. "I'm surprised to see this."
Patel said the man didn't steal anything or even enter the gas station.
"He just broke the glass and walked out," Patel said.
According to BCI, no officers were injured.
The Ohio Patrolmen's Benevolent Association represents Hudson police officers.
OPBA Chief Legal Counsel Daniel Leffler said, "We would like the public to allow the process— due process— to play out, to complete the investigation before drawing any conclusions and we look forward to getting a resolution to the matter."
The name of the man who was shot and his condition have not been released. Hudson officials also have not released the name of the officer or whether the officer is on leave.
The road was shut down for several hours while crews investigated.
