Former treasurer for the Akron Fire Department Union pleads guilty to stealing funds

A former treasurer for the Akron Fire Department's Union Local 330 pleaded guilty to stealing from the union's fund over a period of several years on Tuesday.

Joseph Ruhlin, 41, of Akron stole around $500,000 from the union's fund between January 2011 to March 2017 while he was a treasurer for the union, according to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office.

Ruhlin fled to North Carolina where he was eventually arrested by authorities. He pleaded guilty to theft in the office and tampering with records, both are felonies of the 3rd degree.

A restitution hearing is scheduled for March 13 at 1 p.m.. at the Summit County Common Pleas Court. Ruhlin is expected to be sentenced following the hearing.
