MOGADORE, Ohio — A 53-year-old man was charged this past weekend for attacking an off-duty Mogadore police officer after striking him with a vehicle, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect, Jeffrey E. Cooper, is charged with assault on a peace officer, a fourth-degree felony, and criminal damaging, a second-degree misdemeanor, authorities said.

The incident happened the afternoon of April 25.

According to the sheriff’s office, the off-duty officer was riding a motorcycle when Cooper allegedly struck him with a car. The impact caused the officer to drive off the road and crash.

Cooper then pulled over, got out of his vehicle and attacked the officer, deputies said. Nearby bystanders stopped the assault and Cooper fled the area.

Authorities said additional charges may be forthcoming pending the outcome of the investigation.
