Over 40,000 Ohioans filed initial jobless claims last week

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The number of Ohioans who filed initial jobless claims for the week between Jan. 10 to Jan. 16 reached 42,975, the highest number of initial claims in a single week so far this year.

The week before, Ohioans filed 37,309 initial jobless claims.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Ohioans filed 265,467 continued jobless claims last week, which was 510, 835 fewer than the peak last year.

The total number of initial jobless claims filed in Ohio over the last 44 weeks was more than the combined total of those filed during the last five years.

Over the last 44 weeks, ODJFS has distributed more than $7.9 billion in unemployment compensation payments to more than 900,000 Ohioans.
