SUNNYVALE, Calif. – A United Parcel Service (UPS) worker was planning a mass shooting at the facility he worked at in California, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

The department says it learned of the threat Sunday after receiving a report that 32-year-old Thomas Andrews had sent text messages to his employer, threatening the shooting.

Officers began investigating and discovered Andrews was the registered owner of four handguns and rifle. Law enforcement then began an extensive search for him.

At about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, the department says officers spotted Andrews and attempted to stop him, but he led them in a vehicle pursuit on a nearby highway. Eventually, he was taken into custody.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for Andrews’ home, where officers say they located more than 20,000 rounds of handgun and rifle ammunition, numerous high capacity magazines, five tactical style rifles, one shotgun, three handguns and body armor.

“Several tactical backpacks containing ammunition were staged at the front door of the apartment where the suspect resides,” wrote the department in a press release.

Andrews was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges of evading police, driving under influence and several other weapons violations.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Detective Barron Renzi at (408) 730-7712 or brenzi@sunnyvale.ca.gov.
