People in one Cleveland suburb are wondering who turned out the lights? Stretches of a busy Fairmont Boulevard near North Woodland Road are causing concerns.
"I don't feel super safe," said Helen Harry who lives in Cleveland Heights near the area where the street lights are out at night. "If I lived closer to Fairmount, I wouldn't feel very safe because I walk in the broad daylight and I almost get hit sometimes. So, it can be tough," said Harry.
A viewer told us the area has become so dangerously dark that a neighbor was walking a dog and was almost hit by a car. Harry, herself, is a professional dog walker.
"That's super scary because there are so many dog owners in Cleveland Heights," said Harry. "It should be a well lit area and it's not."
We went to city hall hoping leaders could enlighten us on the situation. They explained that their records show they called the Illuminating Company on Jan. 7 and then again on Jan. 11 trying to get lights fixed. The company told us it only had one record of a call for Fairmount.
We told the Illuminating Company about lights not only being out at night, but we found several street lights on in the middle of the day. The company thanked us for bringing the issue to light and said crews would be out Friday night to pinpoint the lights that have stopped working and by Saturday they should be fixed.
For those living around the area in question, they want this incident to flip a switch for a different approach to street lighting. "I hope this promoted some change," said Harry.
The Illuminating Company told us customers should always call 800-589-3101 any time they see a light out.
The city said it has an app called "Access Cleveland Heights" where these kinds of issues can be reported.
