NORTH GEORGETOWN, Ohio — A fire in an Ohio town destroyed a historic building with ties to the Underground Railroad, according to a report by the Alliance Review.
The Old Stagecoach Inn in North Georgetown was destroyed in a fire that broke out on Thursday night.
The restaurant had closed 15 minutes before the fire had started and firefighters believe the blaze started in the kitchen, the report said.
North Georgetown firefighters were called to the historic site around 10:29 p.m. after a neighbor had reported seeing smoke, according to the report.
As many as 40 firefighters from seven different fire departments worked to put out the flames. Firefighters were on the scene until about 6 a.m., the report said.
Built in 1822, The Old Stagecoach Inn played an important role in the Underground Railroad, connected at one time to another building by a tunnel running under the road.
No one was injured in the fire, according to the report.
