YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Vindicator, the Youngstown newspaper that celebrated its 150th birthday on Tuesday, will cease publication at the end of August, according to the paper.
The newspaper said the publication will come to an end on Saturday, August 31 due to “great financial hardships.”
After exhausting a search for a buyer to continue operations at The Vindicator, the newspaper had to inform its employees Thursday that publication would cease in 60 days.
Efforts were made to generate more revenue, including raising paper prices and driving advertising to the paper and website, but those efforts were unsuccessful, according to The Vindicator.
The Vindicator thanked its loyal readers, staff and carriers for the support over the last 150 years and said the closure comes with “broken hearts.”
The cease of publication will bring with it a loss of 144 employees and 250 carriers.
