Many people who don't like snow are rejoicing with all this warm weather, but there are others who aren't welcoming the weather.
Because the weather has been much, much different than what we're used to, some shops that sell snow blowers and fix snow blowers tell us it's been pretty slow recently.
Last week when some of us had a bit of snow, there was a glimmer of hope, but, of course, the 40-, 50- and 60-degree weather dashed those hopes for businesses relying on Old Man Winter.
Marshall Power Equipment in Lyndhurst told us a bunch of people stopped by early in the fall snatching up their snow blowers in anticipation of winter hitting us hard. But now, the days seem a little unusual at the shop.
"We still have a bit in stock more than we'd like to,” said John McClellan, Sales Manager at Marshall Power Equipment. "On the other hand, we haven't had a first major snow. Last major snowfall...last year... we sold 70 to 80 units in a 48-hour time period."
Those who get paid per plow to push aside people’s snow told us this weather isn't helping their bottom line. However, people who sell or lease trucks with plows on them said they still sell even with the crazy warm days.
Meanwhile at Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills, tee times are all booked up as golfers in northeast Ohio are pumped up about the weather. We made calls to golf courses today who told us they have been going like gangbusters this season opening up fairways, gettting the carts out, and swinging away while Old Man Winter sinks back into a slumber.
This is much more than just making a few more dollars during what normally would be a blanket of white snow covering the greens. It's about enjoying some extra time outside especially after last year.
“Normally we start like in February,” said golfer Jay Boui. “We didn't get out until the third week of April and we got snowed on that day...it was ugly,” he added.
“Usually we stay open until Christmas for gift cards, but as far as the course, it's usually closed by now, " said Mark Vidmar who was called in to work because the course was so busy.
Some courses are open tomorrow, but like Manakiki, they're getting the carts off the course by early afternoon so employees can enjoy Christmas Eve.
Plus, since Mother Nature has had a warm touch to the skies, instead of cozying up to a fireplace people are getting their ice cream on. Businesses told me the warmer weather makes people think about cold treats a lot more so customers are hitting places like East Coast Original Frozen Custard on Mayfield Road.
We asked Jason Conway what made him bring the family out for some ice cream today. “The nice weather, Christmas time and it's 60 degrees…It's amazing,” he told us with a smile.
The manager Bob Olgin said it’s nice to see so many people stopping by. “Everyone's coming in saying ‘I can't believe this is December. Something's wrong somewhere.’ I say, ‘No, we're just getting a blessing’...that's all."
