A Youngstown firefighter was shot Monday in a possible targeted shooting after responding to a house fire.
Emergency crews were called about 10 p.m. to a house fire at Halleck and Elm streets in Youngstown. As crews cleared the fire scene about 11:30 p.m., shots were fired and bullets hit the fire truck and struck a firefighter in the leg, according to News 5's sister station, WYTV.
The injured firefighter was taken to Saint Elizabeth Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
Fire Chief John O’Neill told the television station he doesn’t think the shooting was random and that police are treating it as a targeted shooting.
“I don’t think they were stray bullets. There were a few shots taken, and we have at least two bullet holes in the truck,” O’Neill said told the station. “Now it’s going to be up to the police. Hopefully, the police will get on this and get someone right away and find out what’s going on and why they did it.”
One bullet pierced through the coat of the of a firefighter in the back of a truck and another bullet hit the firefighter who was driving the truck in the right leg, O'Neil said.
