Indians rally against Papelbon to beat Nationals

Posted

The Cleveland Indians were able to maintain their 5 1/2-game edge in the American League Central by staging a late rally against a fellow division leader.

The Indians were on the verge of their fourth straight loss until they scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 7-6 triumph over the Washington Nationals. Tyler Naquin ignited the game-winning rally with an RBI double and scored the tying run on Ryan Zimmerman's throwing error before Francisco Lindor laced a walk-off single. Jonathan Papelbon blew the save by failing to retire any of his four batters.

Lindor had three hits and scored twice for the Indians.

The Nationals lost for the sixth time in eight games, trimming their lead in the NL East to four games over Florida and 4 1/2 over the New York Mets.
