Herman Jackson, like most parents, wanted more for his son than he had for himself. Basketball was the vehicle he used to help his son reach his goals.
“To see him get a chance that I didn’t receive, I feel like all the hard work has paid off,” Herman said.
Herman’s son, Marreon Jackson, is a star basketball player at Garfield Heights High School. His high school career ended in an overtime loss to St. Edward’s in the regional finals but Marreon’s career is not over. He received a scholarship to play basketball at Toledo, a feat his father never had the chance to achieve.
“I am very proud. I didn’t get a chance to learn and go to college,” Herman said.
And Marreon says he couldn’t have reached this point in his career without his father by his side.
“He always prepared me for the next. Like in high school he said ‘Don’t be a freshman, be a sophomore. Don’t ever look to be average, always look to be great,’” Marreon said of his dad.
While Herman may not have gotten all the opportunities he had wanted, his dream now is about what he and his son can accomplish together.
Marreon said, “It means a lot to know whenever my back is against the wall, my dad is there for me.”
