CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns plan to release to veteran tight end Darren Fells, a source confirmed with our media partner Akron Beacon Journal on Sunday.

The team plans to cut Fells after trying to trade him but failing, according to the report.

Fells, 32, was signed to the Browns as an unrestricted free agent last year in the offseason to a three-year $12 million contract. He started in 11 of 16 games and ended the season with 11 receptions for 117 yards and three touchdowns.

David Njoku is the only tight end left on the Browns that has played a significant amount of snaps, the report said.

Njoku started in 14 of 16 games and ended the season with 56 receptions for 639 yards and four touchdowns.

Teams can begin contract negotiations for unrestricted free agents on Monday, with free agency beginning on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The 2019 NFL Draft begins on April 25 at 9 p.m.
