An Akron man has been sentenced in the beating of a 2-year-old boy that left the child disabled.

Kurtis Mathes, 23, received the maximum sentence of eight years in prison on Thursday, according to Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Walsh.

Mathes was watching his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son on January 29, 2014, when he called 911 reporting that the child was not breathing.

Doctors at Akron Children’s Hospital said the child suffered a severe brain injury due to physical abuse.

The boy is now permanently disabled due to the injuries suffered.

Mathes was convicted of felonious assault on the child.
