Craiglist truck scam costs man more than $14,000

newsnet5 has learned a man from Mentor was trying to buy a truck through Craigslist, but ended up losing $14,300.

The man contacted the "seller" only to then be referred to a site that was "holding" the truck for the "seller." That site was going to handle the transaction.

The victim said the site looked legitimate, as it gave him a Carfax and pictures. Plus, supposed reviews on the site came up as having 4 stars and positive feedback for buying vehicles from there.

The con-game was so good that the victim even had a lawyer check out the paperwork. He said the fake company even had "yearly sales" available.

The scammers used a bank in New York. Once the money was wired to that bank, the victim said he was sent an invoice and that the "company" would be contacting him about shipping.

However, the next day, the website was down, the phone was busy and all of the great customer reviews disappeared.

The Ohio Attorney General's Office has been notified. We were told a consumer protection agent would be working the case.

We'll have updates as they become available.
