AKRON, Ohio — A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with arson and attempted murder after allegedly starting a fire that injured his grandfather, according to Lt. Sierjie Lash of the Akron Fire Department.

Shortly before 1 a.m., firefighters responded to 238 Cranz Place in Akron, where the home's second floor was engulfed in smoke.

Firefighters said the fire was quickly put out, according to Lash.

The boy's 71-year-old grandfather was inside the home at the time of the fire. The boy's grandfather was taken to Akron City Hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said the boy was located outside of the home where he was arrested. His grandfather was located on the second floor.

Lash said a dog died in the fire and three cats were rescued from the home.
