AKRON, Ohio — The Akron Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a 23-year-old woman early Wednesday morning.

The woman's identity has not been released.

According to police, the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near East Waterloo Road and Sunset Avenue.

Authorities say the woman was driving a 2002 Ford Escape and heading east on East Waterloo Road when she lost control of the car, struck a curb and then hit a tree.

Police said the woman was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred. The Escape's airbags did not deploy upon impact.

No one else was in the vehicle, authorities said.

Police said that alcohol and speed appear to have been factors in the crash.

The matter remains under investigation.
