CANTON, Ohio — A Canton Neighborhood remains on edge after a 41-year-old man was shot and killed inside his home earlier this week.

But the person who killed Jake Young remains a mystery.

Officers responded to the 1600 block of St. Elmo Avenue NE around 6 p.m. on Tuesday to conduct a welfare check.

They found Young dead inside the home.

Outside the home is a makeshift memorial that includes stuffed animals, flowers, a rosary and a balloon to honor Young.

"I pray for him all the time, and I'll light some candles at church for him," said neighbor Jean Sarris.

Sarris, 78, said that on Tuesday night, a man came over to her house and asked her to dial 911. The man said that when he went to check on Young, the back door was open. He looked through a window and saw the man dead on the floor.

Officers responded and determined that Young was killed inside his home—a shooting that left neighbors bewildered and frightened.

"He was a real quiet person. He never bothered anyone. I don't understand what happened," Sarris said.

Police said no one has been charged with the killing.

Sarris wants justice for Young and peace in her neighborhood.

"It's pretty scary. I wake up at night and think about it all the time and look over there and know that he's not there, and I can't believe he's gone," Sarris said.

According to a Canton investigative report, a friend told police that it appeared Young's doorbell camera to the right of the front door had been ripped off, and it was found lying in the front yard. We checked today and found there is a doorbell camera on the home.

We wanted to ask investigators if the camera could have been tampered with, or if any possible video of the shooter outside the house was recorded, but police are not commenting further on the case.

The violence is not something that neighbor Jennery Jenkins expected in her neighborhood.

"I think people should be able to live in their neighborhood and be safe and protected," Jenkins said.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call the Canton police at 330-649-5800.
