AKRON, Ohio — A pedestrian was struck and killed in a crash in Akron on Sunday morning, according to the Akron Police Department.
Officers responded to a crash in the 700 block of Merriman Road around 7 a.m. after a 73-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while getting his newspaper from the sidewalk near his driveway, according to police.
The 2018 Toyota Rav 4 was traveling northbound on Merriman Road, drove left of center and struck the curb. The vehicle then hit a tree, struck the victim and hit a lamppost, police said.
The driver of the Rav 4 fled the area in the vehicle.
The victim was transported to Cleveland Clinic Akron General where we later died, according to police.
Officers located the Rav 4, unoccupied, in the 2400 block of Akron-Peninsula Road.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office identified the 73-year-old man as Ernest Liska, of Merriman Road in Akron.
The incident is currently under investigation.
