AKRON, Ohio — Akron police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-skip on Interstate 77 Saturday night.

Police said a pedestrian, identified as 60-year-old Ervin Detweiler, was struck and killed while standing on the side of the road on I-77 northbound after his pickup truck had broken down at the end of the on-ramp from East Wilbeth Road to I-77 northbound.

While a flatbed tow truck was hooking upon the disabled truck, Detweiler, who was standing along the driver’s side of his vehicle, was struck by another vehicle that sideswiped his truck before hitting him, dragging him north along the highway.

The vehicle fled the scene, police said.

Investigators believe the vehicle involved in the hit-skip is a black Nissan Altima with right, front-end damage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Akron Police Department Bureau at 330-375-2490.
