AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron and its police department honored three residents Wednesday afternoon for their life-saving actions in helping a woman and children after she was shot earlier this week.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Sunday near Exchange and South Arlington streets. A mother was walking with her children when her boyfriend pulled up at the intersection and a physical altercation ensued. During the fight, the man pulled out a gun and shot the woman in the back while she shielded her children from gunfire.

Three citizens in two separate vehicles jumped out of their vehicles to intervene and rescue the woman and her three children. Two men wrestled with the boyfriend and then helped the woman and her children into their cars.

"They are the true heroes by coming to the aid of this woman and her children," said Akron Police Public Information Officer Lt. Rick Edwards.
