For the first time ever, Summit County is offering full scholarships for the police academy

AKRON, Ohio — For the first time ever, Summit County is offering full scholarships to attract people into the police academy for the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

In an effort to get more recruits because of a nationwide police shortage, and the fact they have 60 to 70 deputies that will soon will eligible for retirement, the Summit County Sheriff's Office is hosting a recruitment event for part-time and full-time positions.

Prospective recruits must meeting the following criteria:

  • Must be 20.5 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Must be in good physical condition
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must NOT have any felony or drug convictions
  • Must NOT have any arrests for domestic violence

The Summit County Sheriff's Office has enough funding to give scholarships to up to 20 people.

The recruitment will take place on two days: Tuesday, March 26, from 4- 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at OhioMeansJobs Summit County, 1040 E. Tallmadge Ave., in Akron.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office offers competitive wages, paid vacation and sick leave, uniform allowance and public employee retirement system, according to the release.
