AKRON, Ohio — Akron authorities were able to end a nearly five-hour standoff on Britain Road Sunday afternoon that began when a man on his balcony yelled racial slurs at two Black men, according to Akron police and News 5 media partner Akron Beacon Journal.

59-year-old Dwayne Keller was arrested and later charged with aggravated menacing and ethnic intimidation after a racially charged standoff, ABJ reported.

Video of the moments before the standoff showed Keller on his balcony yelling the n-word and “Black boy” at two men in the parking lot below, according to ABJ.

Akron police said they received a call that Keller was yelling racial slurs and then began waving a gun and draped a confederate flag over his balcony railing during the incident.

Police were called around 9:30 a.m. and an Akron SWAT team was sent to the apartment. Authorities fired tear gas into the apartment and after nearly five hours were able to arrest Keller, according to police and ABJ reporting.

A neighbor who witnessed the standoff said he was glad to see it end the way it did.

“I was just worried about a lot of my neighbors, made sure they were okay,” he said. “I went and checked on a few to see if they were alright.”

Akron police said they searched Keller's apartment and recovered a BB gun and two pistol magazines.
