SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Springfield Township police are looking for an Akron man wanted for allegedly threatening two residents and setting off a pipe bomb near them on Saturday.
Brian M. Capien, 39, is wanted on several charges, including aggravated menacing, menacing by stalking, criminal possession of an explosive device, criminal use of an explosive device, telecommunications harassment and inducing panic.
One victim told police that Capien contacted another victim via cell phone, according to a Springfield Township police report. Capien left a voicemail message stating that he was on his way to the victims’ location, that he would kill them and he had something for them.
Capien then arrived near the home on Ambre Drive on a bicycle. Once Capien noticed one of the victims outside, he lit a pipe bomb and set it off on nearby Scenic Way. He then fled the area, investigators said.
Sgt. Eric East said the explosive was homemade and consisted of cardboard, foil and rubber gasket-type material. The explosion shook some nearby homes and knocked pictures off walls.
"That's an extra scary person to us," East said. "That's the kind of person that takes the time to do the research on how to build something like that. This is a dangerous individual."
East said ATF agents may also investigate the case and could consider federal charges.
Police released raw video of the pipe bomb going off. WARNING: Graphic language.
A warrant was issued for Capien’s arrest.
