AKRON, Ohio — Recycling in Akron just got a little more high-tech and easier thanks to a new app launched by the City of Akron on Tuesday.
Made for both Android and Apple devices, the “Akron Recycles” app is equipped with a search tool so residents can learn about correct recycling methods using their curbs carts.
“Akron Recycles” can answer questions in the Waste Wizard tool with a simple search that yields an image of the item and the proper way to dispose of or recycle it.
For example, if users look up “garden hoses,” they will see a simple response that an item like this should go in your trash cart. Searching “egg carton” reveals several responses, depending on whether the item is made of paper, Styrofoam or plastic.
Typing in “yard trimmings” will show that biodegradable materials should be placed in lawn and leaf bags, with the app reminding users to schedule bulk waste collection through 3-1-1.
The creation of the app stems from the Recycle Right campaign the city took part in over the summer. The educational initiative involved a “feet on the street” method to tag recycling containers as a way to provide direct feedback to residents who were recycling incorrectly.
