A Summit County deputy was attacked by a defendant during a court hearing Tuesday morning at Summit County Common Pleas Court.
Video from Judge Christine Croce's courtroom shows 28-year-old David Bauer struggle with deputies. Bauer was handcuffed, but he was still able to use his hands to strike one of the deputies in his face, causing a minor injury to his jaw.
According to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, Bauer was convicted of burglary earlier this year. He was in court Tuesday for a community control violation hearing.
According to a police report, Bauer became disruptive and made comments to the judge. The deputy was assaulted as Bauer was ushered out of the courtroom.
"That's why deputies are in there and they do a great job and they have to stand there for hours and hours with nothing happening and they have to be ready in a split-second to react and that's what the deputies did," said Inspector Bill Holland.
Judge Croce has recused herself from Bauer's case, which will be assigned to another judge.
