American Red Cross announces critical call for people to donate blood

The American Red Cross is issuing a warning on a severe shortage of blood.

Donations have dropped in the last two months, resulting in 61,000 fewer donations than needed.

The nonprofit organization encourages blood and platelet donors of all types to give now.

Blood donation opportunities are coming to several Ohio counties July 5-25.

The counties include:

  • Ashtabula

  • Cuyahoga

  • Erie

  • Geauga

  • Huron

  • Lake

  • Lorain

People are in need of blood donations every two seconds for situations such as heart surgery or car accidents.

More than 1.69 million people are estimated to experience cancer in 2017 according to the American Cancer Society. A lot of those individuals will need blood during their treatment.
