According to the city, with the Republican National Convention just four months away, Cleveland has been busy renovating public areas and preparing for a large group of visitors.
Cleveland expects the four-day convention, scheduled for July 18-21, to bring more than 50,000 people to the area, including 15,000 members of the media from across the world.
Cleveland's RNC will be designated by the federal government as a National Special Security Event, the city said in a statement, which means authority will be controlled by the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.
Cleveland said those agencies will have security zones throughout the city. The federal government will provide at least $50 million for security, including $20 million for equipment and $30 million for personnel.
The Cleveland Police Department has spent more than a year working with federal, state and area law enforcement to make sure all agencies are on the same page.
Cleveland said security planning also includes the creation of protestors' zones and possible parade routes.
“We are confident that the Cleveland Police Department will ensure that everyone is safe and free to exercise their constitutional rights of free speech,” said Cleveland City Council President Kevin J. Kelley.
Cleveland is expected to dispatch another 4,000-5,000 police officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout the region. The city said the extra forces will ensure Cleveland's neighborhoods are not without police patrols during convention activities happening downtown.
Cleveland City Councilman Matt Zone, who is also the chairman of the council's Safety Committee, said the citizens of Cleveland can be sure that their neighborhoods will be closely watched and regularly patrolled by police.
"Safety in our neighborhoods will not be compromised by a downtown convention," Zone said.
